Is Your Eating Habits Leading You Toward Type 2 Diabetes?

One of the biggest contributors to the type 2 diabetes epidemic is obesity, largely driven by our modern lifestyles.
Are you unknowingly eating yourself into type 2 diabetes?
Check if you have any of these 4 common eating habits that could lead to obesity—and increase your risk:
1) Unconscious Eating
No, not sleep-eating, but eating without paying attention. How often do you eat while watching TV, reading, or listening to something else? Studies show that distracted eating, especially with TV, can increase how much we consume—by up to 33% in preschool children!
How much extra are you eating without noticing because you’re distracted?
2) Eating Too Fast
Do you finish your meals before others? Eating quickly can lead to overeating because your brain doesn’t get the “full” signal in time. Slowing down—putting down your fork between bites—can help you recognize fullness and avoid that uncomfortable bloated feeling.
One famous example: my father takes twice as long to eat as the rest of us—and he’s remarkably slim!
3) Snacking Without Hunger
Are you really hungry, or just craving a bite? Snacking on sugary treats like cookies, chocolate, and snack bars adds extra sugar that can overwhelm your body and lead to insulin resistance—a key factor in type 2 diabetes.
If you must snack, choose sugar-free or low-sugar options.
4) Sugary Drinks
Do you drink soda or sugary fruit juices? These beverages pack a big sugar punch and can contribute to weight gain and poor blood sugar control. A US study showed that drinking just one sugary drink a day increased women’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 80%!
Are you unintentionally on the slippery slope to diabetes? A little awareness about what, where, and how you eat can make a big difference in reducing your risk.
Your health is worth the mindful effort!
