A DNA Link between Diabetes and Obesity

There is no definitive cause for diabetes, but certain risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing the disease. One of the few risk factors within your control is your weight. If you are obese, losing even a small amount of weight can significantly improve your health and reduce your risk of diabetes.

While losing weight may sound simple, it can be challenging. Recent studies have uncovered a genetic component linked to obesity and diabetes. This genetic mutation affects how the body processes energy and insulin — two critical factors in the development of both diabetes and obesity.

However, carrying this genetic mutation doesn’t guarantee that you will become obese or develop diabetes. It simply means you may need to put in extra effort to maintain a healthy weight and delay or prevent the onset of diabetes. It’s important to discuss prevention strategies and options with your doctor.

Alarmingly, this gene has even been found in very young children. Preschoolers are now being diagnosed with obesity and type 2 diabetes, likely due to genetic factors. However, parents can help reduce these risks by encouraging healthy lifestyle habits from an early age.

With the discovery of this DNA link, researchers are hopeful that future treatments or preventative measures can be developed to address this genetic risk.
