Diabetes occurs when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps move sugar (glucose) from the blood into the body’s cells, where it is converted into energy. Type 2 diabetes happens when the body becomes resistant to insulin, causing blood sugar levels to become imbalanced. Maintaining insulin sensitivity is key, as it helps the body move glucose efficiently from the blood into cells.

Certain herbs, foods, vitamins, and minerals can improve insulin sensitivity and support healthy blood sugar levels. For example, vanadyl sulfate has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, while the herb Gymnema sylvestre helps control sugar cravings and supports pancreatic health.

Physical activity is also key in boosting insulin sensitivity. Athletes typically require less insulin because physical activity enhances the body’s ability to use it. Exercise additionally aids in weight control and reduces body fat—both important for maintaining insulin sensitivity.

A balanced diet is another important factor. Complex carbohydrates found in vegetables, apples, grains, and nuts digest slowly, helping to keep blood sugar levels steady and avoiding spikes caused by refined sugars. It’s also important to avoid saturated fats, while healthy fats from fish, olive oil, and flaxseed can support insulin sensitivity.

Type 2 diabetes, which is the most prevalent type, occurs due to insulin resistance. The strategies above are effective for maintaining insulin sensitivity, lowering blood sugar levels, and preventing complications related to diabetes.
