8 Signs of a Diabetes Symptom

If you notice two or more of these pre-diabetes symptoms, it’s important to get a medical checkup as soon as possible:

  1. Feeling excessively thirsty, not just after exercise or hot weather.

  2. Constant dry mouth, even after drinking fluids.

  3. Frequent urination.

  4. Unexpected weight loss or gain, despite feeling hungry and eating regularly (which might also worsen symptoms if your diet is poor).

  5. Persistent lethargy — feeling weak, tired, and lacking energy.

  6. Occasional blurred vision — untreated diabetes-related eye issues can lead to blindness. Getting regular eye check-ups is essential, particularly as you get older.

  7. Cuts, sores, or bruises (particularly on your feet) that heal slowly.

  8. Excessive itching, soreness in the genital area, or frequent yeast infections, which could indicate excess sugar in your urine.

At-Risk Factors

There are several forms of diabetes, including pre-diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, gestational diabetes, and maturity-onset diabetes. Your risk increases based on age, lifestyle, and family history. You might be more prone to developing diabetes if any of the following apply:

  • Your ethnic background is African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic/Latino.

  • You have a parent or sibling with diabetes.

  • You are over 45 years old and overweight.

  • You have had gestational diabetes or given birth to a baby weighing over 9 pounds.

  • You have high blood pressure.

  • Your cholesterol levels are elevated or unhealthy.

If you recognize any of these signs or risk factors, consult your healthcare provider promptly for screening and guidance. Taking steps early on can help stop pre-diabetes from developing into full-blown diabetes.
