7 Diabetes Foot Care Tips

If you have diabetes, knowing how to manage your condition is vital to your well-being.

One important area that often gets overlooked is foot care. Without proper care, you risk developing sores or infections that could, in the worst cases, lead to amputations — as sadly happened to my father-in-law. To help reduce your risk, here are 7 essential foot care tips:

  1. Check your feet daily — especially if you have reduced sensation or no feeling. Cuts, sores, or grazes can easily go unnoticed and lead to serious problems.

  2. Never walk barefoot, even indoors. You might accidentally step on something sharp or stub your toes. Always protect your feet with socks and well-fitting shoes or slippers.

  3. Take care of corns and calluses. Ask your doctor or podiatrist for advice on the safest way to manage them.

  4. Clean your feet every day using warm—not hot—water. Avoid soaking your feet, as this can dry out your skin and cause cracks or sores.

  5. Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes. Moist areas can become breeding grounds for infections.

  6. Exercise your legs and feet regularly. Even simple movements like rotating your ankles, wiggling your toes, or moving your legs while sitting help improve blood circulation and reduce foot problems.

  7. Make sure to have your feet examined by a healthcare professional at least once a year. This can usually be done during your annual diabetes checkup when your A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol are tested.

If you have difficulty bending or reaching your feet, ask a family member, diabetic nurse, doctor, or podiatrist for help with foot care and nail trimming.

Taking these simple but important steps can greatly reduce your risk of painful complications and keep your feet healthy.
